Probably Swabia late 15th century

A late 15th century wooden figure of Saint Dorothy, probably Swabia

Carved three-quarters in the round, the reverse flattened and hollowed out. Extensive remains of older polychromy, overpainted in large areas. A standing figure of the crowned saint designed for a frontal viewpoint. She is dressed in a pleated, high-waisted gown and a cloak draped around her body. The figure is characterised by the finely observed facial features, hair, and drapery of the cloak and gown. According to the Legenda Aurea, Saint Dorothy was accompanied by a little boy with a basket of apples and roses on her way to her execution, and thus the little figure of the boy with a basket is provided as her attribute here.
The roses in the basket are an addition. A vertical crack to the reverse. Partially replaced losses to the back of the plinth due to insect damage. Height 105 cm.

Provenance

Private collection, Bavaria.
