Flemish third quarter of the 16th century

A Flemish carved limestone figure of Saint Jerome

Carved in the round, the reverse only summarily worked. With older polychromy, presumably partially original. A standing figure of the doctor of the church designed for a frontal and slightly lowered viewpoint. He wears a cardinal's habit and carries a staff and book, the lion standing at his feet serves as an identifying attribute. This lively and finely carved piece is characterised by its elongated proportions and well rendered pattern of drapery accentuating the figure's gently swaying pose. The style of carving, especially that of the facial features, indicates an origin in the Flemish-Netherlandish tradition of the Maas and Rhine Region.
The upper and lower ends of the staff lost. Wear with losses but otherwise in good condition. Mounted on a wooden base. Height 71 cm (without base).
