Raffaele Carelli

Two Landscapes of Naples

Oil on canvas. Each 43.5 x 35 cm.
Both signed and dated lower right: R. Carelli 1834.

Raffaele Carelli studied at the Academy in Naples from 1815 to 1820, where he was taught by the Swiss-German landscape painter Jakob Wilhelm Huber. His landscapes of southern Italy, painted out of doors and not in the studio, were particularly popular among widely travelled English women. Alongside Huber and Giacinto Gigante, Carelli was one of the leading proponents of the School of Posilippo. He was also patriarch of a large family of artists, including his sons Gabriele, Consalvo, and Achille Carelli and his grandson Raffaele Carelli (1866-1956). Alongside the landscape of his home region, the surroundings of Naples, Raffaele Carelli also painted views of Greece, Asia Minor, and Sicily, which he discovered during a trip there with the Duke of Devonshire in 1839.
