The painter Henry van Ingen began his studies at the art academy in The Hague in 1844 at age 11, leaving in 1850. The landscape painter Hendrik van de Sande Bakhuyzen had the greatest influence on his style. He moved to the US in 1861, where he became founding director of the Vassar Art College. The present work, dated 1852, is a rare example of his œuvre.
