Edouard Brandon

Singer Outside an Italian Tavern

Oil on canvas (relined). 53 x 72 cm.
Signed and dated lower left: Ed. Brandon 1865.

Edouard Brandon, whose place of birth is recorded both as Paris and London, was born into a Jewish family who are thought to have emigrated from Portugal. He studied at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris, where Camille Corot was among his teachers. Brandon resided in Rome from 1856 to 1863, where he made the acquaintance of Edgar Degas. Degas invited him to take part in the exhibition at Nadar's studio in 1874, which was later to gain notoriety as the location of the first Impressionist exhibition. Alongside Jewish themes, Brandon's œuvre also included motifs from daily life in Italy inspired by his long stay in Rome. The present work captures the bright light and carefree atmosphere of the Mediterranean, and was painted two years after his return to Paris.
