Wilhelm Trübner

View of Heidelberg Castle

Oil on canvas. 62 x 76.5 cm.
Signed and dated lower right: W. Trübner 1897.

This work presents a topographically accurate view of the famous castle at Heidelberg. The palace ruins on a hill are seen from the east, with all remaining architectural fragments clearly recognisable. We also see the bend in the river Neckar with the two bridges - today the Theodor-Heuss- and Karl-Theodor-Brücke - and the Heiligenberg rising upwards on the right.
In his topographic works, Trübner frequently depicts historic or traditional monuments located in park landscapes or larger scenery. He often places landscape details close to the beholder in order to emphasise the illusion of depth. Here, he paints the castle ruins in the mid ground against a hazy background and distant pinkish clouds, which further accentuate this effect.
Dr. Klaus Rohrandt, Kiel, has examined the present work first-hand and will be including it in his forthcoming catalogue raisonné.
