Particularly the cataloguing of the different states (termed "Fassungen" by Nolde) and colour variants of the colour lithographs by Emil Nolde posed an enormous challenge for Gustav Schiefler when compiling the catalogue raisonné. In a letter to Schiefler, dated 25 August 1913, even Nolde admitted frankly: "It is impossible to catalogue the new lithographs. I have continually changed the stones and colours from morning until night, for eight weeks. Now you will have to identify and classify them yourself - this appears impossible to me."
