A Tanba vase. Edo period

A Tanba vase with a wide neck and two handles to the shoulder, the body with engraved diagonal lines, and covered with a thin glaze with a white glaze running in streaks and drops. Edo period. Wooden box, the lid inscribed Tanba, the reverse of the lid inscribed Seikai and with a paper label with a seal reading Ryûichi. Kuki Ryûichi (1852-1931) was a politician specializing in cultural policy, first director of the Tokyo National Museum and the one-time owner of the vase.
