Napoleon's Egyptian expedition in 1798 - 1801 triggered a veritable craze for the exotic land and its history. The scientific findings of the expedition published by Dominique-Vivant Denon in his work "Description d'Égypte", formed the foundations of the emerging discipline of Egyptology. Alongside the major porcelain manufactories, the silversmiths of Europe were also inspired to create designs in the Egyptian taste.

Purchased from Dr. Helmut Seling, Munich.
