Oil on brass. 40.5 x 30.5 cm.

The large oil painting (oil on canvas,147 x 113 cm) upon which this work is based was completed in 1850 and is now housed in the collection of the École nationale supérieure des Beaux-Arts in Paris, where Bouguereau was taught.
He was awarded the Prix de Rome for this expressive and dynamic work in the year it was painted. As part of the prize he received a stipend which allowed him to work for four years at the Villa Medici.
