Alongside interior scenes and occasional still lifes, Otto Pippel's repertoire mainly consists of landscapes and vedutas. He drew his motifs from the landscapes of Italy, especially Lake Garda, as well as France and the countryside of his native Bavaria. The present work depicts Forstenrieder Park, south-west of Munich. In the foreground of the piece, we see the spectators of the eponymous car race lined up on either side of the track. Whilst the audience take advantage of the shade offered by nearby trees, the racetrack itself is illuminated by bright sunshine. Looking carefully at the left of the work, one can just about see edge of a car. This allows us to date the work to the 1920s, as it was then that car races began being held at Forstenrieder Park.
