A Berlin KPM biscuit porcelain bust of Friedrich von Schiller

Idealised depiction of the young poet (in around the 1790s). Inscribed to the lower edge "SCHILLER". Blue sceptre mark to the interior. H 30 cm.
1st half 19th C., presumably after a model by Chistrian Friedrich Tieck.

Christian Friedrich Tieck (1776 Berlin 1851) made several portraits of the poet Schiller. His most famous bust is now kept in the Schillerhaus in Weimar, and several casts of it can be found in Marbach, the Schiller-Nationalmuseum, and in Mannheim Palace. The present work follows a type established by Johann Heinrich Dannecker, depicting Schiller with furrowed brows, a lined forehead, prominent lower lip, and strong chin. Dannecker's sculpture was created from life in 1794 and is now housed in the Walhalla memorial.

Provenance

Private collection, Westphalia.
