A huge royal Berlin KPM porcelain vase with a portrait of Crown Prince Frederick William and a view of the Kronprinzenpalais

Model no. 1685. A large, round vase fired in three parts and mounted via large bronze foliate handles and a beaded ring. Both sides decorated with gilt-rimmed crowned oval portrait reserves. Blue sceptre mark with circle mark, red imperial eagle mark. H 82.5 cm.
Ca. 1865.

The architect Johann Heinrich Strack redesigned the palace at no. 3 Unter den Linden for Prince Frederick William of Prussia and his future wife, Princess Victoria of England, between 1856 and 1857. He replaced the Baroque roof with a third story in a Neoclassical design and added a portico with a roof terrace to the facade. This portrait depicts the young crown prince in uniform with the Order of the Black Eagle. He is already shown with a beard, which he is thought to have only let grow in 1762. A similar vase with a portrait of William I can be found in Wernigerode Palace.
