Haakon VII of the House of Schleswig-Holstein-Sonderburg-Glücksburg (Gentofte 1872 - Gentofte 1957) was born Prince of Denmark, but was elected King of Norway by plebiscite following the dissolution of the union between Sweden and Norway in 1905. Tor Bomann-Larsen, a Danish historian specialising in King Haakon IIV and Queen Maud, has examined the cigarette case and suspects that it may have been presented to them as a personal gift by Emperor William II on occasion of the coronation festivities in Trondheim. Emperor William loved Norway and considered it the birthplace of the Germanic Peoples. Beginning in 1889, he took cruises to Scandinavia every year in his yacht, the “Hohenzollern”. There he went to great lengths to gain the affections of the new monarch, but his efforts were met with a reserved response.
