Riders in a Mountainous Landscape

Oil on panel (parquetted). 26.5 x 36.5 cm.

The composition and motif of this panoramic mountain landscape stand firmly in the Flemish landscape tradition of around 1600. The artist uses the classic three colour compositional scheme to evoke depth and distance: Brown for the foreground, green for the mid-ground, and blue for the background. The viewer's eye is directed from the trees and the two riders with their horses on the left edge into the distance. A shepherd is shown searching among the trees for his dog, who appears to be following a scent.
