Gaspard Dughet, called Poussin

An Arcadian Landscape in the Campagna

Oil on canvas (relined). 73 x 87 cm.

Giuliano Briganti dates the present work to Gaspard Dughet's latter period, which is characterised by a “painterly” treatment of landscape (“decisamente pittorico“) in contrast to his more realistic earlier phase. Briganti compares this work to a landscape by Dughet in the collection of Christ Church College in Oxford. The painter was the son of a Frenchman living in Rome. Taught to paint by his brother-in-law Nicolas Poussin, he was also known as Gaspard Poussin. Among other commissions, he was responsible for frescoes in the palaces of the Colonna and Pamphilij, and alongside Salvator Rosa he is considered one of the leading landscape painters in Seicento Rome.

Certificate

Giuliano Briganti, Rome, 13.6.1991.
