Antoine Monnoyer

Still Life with Flowers and Fruit

Oil on canvas. 83 x 97 cm.

Antoine Monnoyer was the eldest son of the flower painter Jan Baptiste Monnoyer. He was taught to paint by his father and continued working in the same successful style. Like his father and his brother Baptiste, Antoine Monnoyer was among those widely travelled artists of the 17th and 18th centuries to experience international success throughout Europe. He resided in Amsterdam, where he married in 1699, but also lived in London, Rome, Copenhagen, and Stockholm. Due to this, his decorative works were well-known throughout Europe and can now be admired in numerous public and private collections throughout the continent. Antoine used a slightly lighter colour palette than his father and his compositions are more playful and vivacious, in keeping with the zeitgeist of the early Rococo era in which he worked.
