Flemish early 16th century

An early 16th century Flemish figure of Christ at Rest

Carved three-quarters in the round and partially freestanding. The reverse flattened. Uniform older polychromy. This expressive devotional piece depicts Christ in the crown of thorns dressed in a perizonium, seated at rest on a rocky bench. The drops of blood that stain His flesh are reminders of His flagellation, and He holds two instruments of the passion in His hands (the flail possibly replaced).
Wear with minor losses to the crown of thorns and the plinth. Height 35.5 cm.

Provenance
