Rhineland circa 1520/1530

A Rhenish carved wooden Crucifix plinth, circa 1520/1530

Carved three-quarters in the round, the reverse flattened. Minimal remains of former polychromy. The hole in the top of the piece was probably intended to hold a Crucifix, whilst the two sides served as plinths for the crosses of the two thieves. This finely carved work depicts Mary Magdalene kneeling with a jar of ointment and three soldiers fighting over Christ's robe on a rocky outcrop with the coat-of-arms of the city of Cologne depicted prominently in the foreground.
Mary Magdalene's right hand lacking, the left possibly replaced. Very minor wear. 21.5 x 57 x 12.5 cm.
