Flemish 1st half 16th century

A Flemish carved wood figure of the Christ at Rest, 1st half 16th century

Possibly oak, carved three-quarters in the round and partially freestanding, the reverse flattened. Minimal remains of former polychromy. A devotional image designed for a frontal and slightly lowered viewpoint. The work depicts Christ resting on a stone wearing the crown of thorns, bound and clothed only in a perizonium. A long robe and two flails are shown at his feet, reminding the beholder of his passion, alongside a toad and a skull symbolic of the transitory nature of life.
Parts of the cord lost. Minimal wear. Height 58 cm.

Provenance

Private collection, Northwest Germany.
