Italy mid-16th century

An Italian carved wood relief of the parting of the Red Sea, mid-16th century

The reverse flattened. A high-relief depiction with narrow borders, presumably designed as a decorative wall panel. In the right of the work we see the Israelites, led by Moses, crossing the Red Sea whilst the Egyptians behind them are engulfed by its floods. The left side of the work depicts Israelite women singing God's praises.
A drilled hole to the upper centre. Very minimal wear. 54 x 104 x 4 cm.
