Jacob Philipp Hackert
A View of Capri and Procida in the Gulf of Naples
Pencil, brown ink and wash. 58 x 90 cm.
Framed.
Signed and dated lower left: 1798 Filippo Hackert.
This drawing was made in 1798, Hackert's last year as court painter to Ferdinand IV in Naples. The kingdom of Naples had just declared war on France and was preparing for military conflict. Hackert observed these developments with growing concern and withdrew himself more and more from court life, taking long walks along the gulf of Pozzuoli. It was here that he made the present work, which shows the islands of Capri and Procida as seen from the Capo Miseno. When the French conquered Naples in 1799, Hackert fled to Livorno in the Grand Duchy of Tuscany. He later settled in Florence, and died in the nearby town of San Piero di Careggio in 1807.
The present work's flawless provenance can be ascertained from a label on the reverse.
