Schelfhout's winter scenes all tend to follow the same principles of composition, with a group of houses or a row of trees forming a counterbalance to a view into the distance. Whether as paintings or drawings, these compositions were incredibly popular with his contemporaries at home and abroad. Winter landscapes in his style even came to be known as “Schelfhoutjes“.
Willem Laanstra will include this painting in his forthcoming catalogue raisonné as nr. WO 29-3.

Provenance

Part of a private collection in Hesse for around 100 years.
