This work depicts the Forum Romanum seen through one of the arches of the Colosseum. In the centre we see the apse of the temple of Venus and Roma, constructed under Hadrian, in the background the bell tower of the Church of Santa Francesca Romana, and to one side the Arch of Titus. We also see the arches of the medieval portico leading into the Church of Saints Cosmas and Damian. The present work is one of three versions of this motif painted by Wilhelm Brücke.
