Vincenzo Giovannini

The Forum Romanum

Oil on canvas (relined). 92.5 x 165 cm.

Vincenzo Giovannini was born in Todi in Umbria, but moved to Rome in young years, where he trained as a painter at the Accademia de San Michele and later became a member of the Guild of Saint Luke. He specialised in city views and worked for numerous art dealers, who mainly commissioned him to paint Rome's ancient monuments. The Forum Romanum was among the most popular vedutas, and he painted it from various angles and in numerous formats. The work offered here is notable for its large size and impressive detail. It shows the ruins bathed in the warm light typical of Giovannini's works.

Provenance

Private ownership, Italy.
