Rudolf Epp trained at the Academy in Karlsruhe under Johann Wilhelm Schirmer before moving to Munich in 1863. There he took up genre painting, influenced by Defregger, Knaus, and Vautier. This large-format work depicts a summer hop harvest. According to Boetticher, the piece was exhibited in Düsseldorf in 1869 and sold in the 5th Cologne Cathedral Construction Lottery in January 1870.
