The etching depicts a motive from the sequence of watercolours with representations from the circus dating 1922 ("Verächter des Todes /Zwei Artisten", Otto Dix Estate, cf. exhib. cat. Düsseldorf/ Liverpool, 2017, op. cit., cat. no.160 with colour illus.)
