Oil on canvas 65.2 x 92.2 cm Framed. Monogrammed 'FM' in brown-black lower right, dated '1928' below scratched into the colour. Additionally signed and dated 'Frans Masereel 1928' in black brush verso on canvas on the right. - Fragmented handwritten label "Masereel/Paysage d'Equihen" verso on stretcher bar with a browned fragment of the imprinted label from Galerie Billiet, Pierre Vorms, Paris, verso centre left. - 1997 professionally restored and cleaned by the former owner; partially with small retouches; with an old, small canvas damage backed with square canvas patch verso centre left; overall in fine condition.
Charming coastal landscape with the view of the fishermen's village Equihen situated south of Bologne-sur-Mer on the English Channel. Heavy wooden dinghies with retracted rudders and centreboards lie up on the dunes. Strong contrasts between light and dark and delicate coloured accents enliven the composition and atmosphere.
