A large lacquer panel. 18th/19th century

A large lacquer panel of oblong shape, painted in gold with a lakeside landscape with strolling sages on a bridge, a group of dwellings built into the water underneath tall trees, a waterfall amidst steep, rocky mountains, and various boats. Inscription Shan gauo wu bi yan, dated cyclically gengchen (1760, 1820 or 1880) and signed Zhou Li. Wooden frame, probably original. 18th/19th century.
110.5 x 185 cm (with frame)

There has been a long tradition in China of gilt-lacquered objects. Very few of them are dated to the Wanli period and from the inscription we know they have been made in Yangcheng, the old name of Canton. Canton was also the place where a great number of screens, work tables and cabinets were manufactured for export to the West. The decoration emphasises the exotic nature of China showing cityscapes and pagodas as well as genre figures, while lacquered chairs, tables and cabinets for the Chinese market extending to the Peranakan culture of the China Straights were painted with Chinese-style landscapes in the typical literate mode. Panels such as the present one however, seem to be extremely rare.
