A wood netsuke of a rakan with a ball. 19th century

The bearded and long-haired man stands in a dancing posture on one leg holding up a ball accentuated with red lacquer, the long shawl slung over both arms. Restored.
Height 7.3 cm

Henri Joly is perfectly right in describing the netsuke as an “old man, nearly naked, dancing …”, for it is difficult to decide whether the carver wanted to represent a rakan or a sennin.
