Carl Anton was the second son of the important portrait painter Anton Graff. He undertook an educational sojourn to Switzerland and Italy in 1801, and resided in Rome until 1807 before returning to Dresden. Graff specialised in Romantic mountain landscapes, usually painted in ink or sepia, and very few paintings of his are currently known. In the 18th and 19th centuries, the waterfalls at Tivoli were among the most popular motifs among foreign painters residing in Rome.
