Ferdinand Knab

Evening Landscape with Ancient Temple Ruins

Oil on canvas. 100.5 x 80.5 cm.
Signed and dated lower right: 18 F.Knab. 90/9.

Ferdinand Knab embarked on a sojourn to Italy in 1868, during which he studied the ruins of ancient Rome. The present work, painted two decades later, is still inspired by the impressions left during this trip. The work perfectly captures the light and the atmosphere of Italy and conjours an elegiac mood with the depiction of ancient temples. Ferdinand Kalb was court painter to Ludwig II, and among many other projects he was also involved in the decoration of the Winter Garden of the Munich Residence and Linderhof Castle.
