A carved ivory relief "Elephants de guerre”

Mounted on a wooden panel and housed in a palisander frame. A large carved panel with a deeply modelled and dynamic scene. Inscribed to a cartouche on the frame "Élephants de guerre Sarmates combattant contra les Daces". Signed lower right: C. Loredin 1753. Frame H 52.5, W 76.5 cm.
Attributed to Dieppe, late 19th C.

This depiction is based on a drawing published in the "Münchener Bilderbogen" as no. 400 in 1865, entitled "Kriegselefanten im Kampf mit Daciern und Sarmaten" by Gottlob Heinrich Leutemann. Leutemann was born in 1824, visited the Academy in Leipzig and became a popular illustrator of animal motifs whose images were published in numerous magazines. The signature on the ivory plaque bears a fictitious date, a popular phenomena at this time.
