Antonio Tibaldi

Still Life with Silver, Sweetmeats, Roses, a Guitar, and a Dog on a Table

Oil on canvas (relined). 95 x 131 cm.

In this work, Antonio Tibaldi presents one corner of a “personal/official” room as a celebration of the taste, refinement, and wealth of his client. We know that in 1667 this painter was "40 years old and lived in Rome near Santa Maria del Popolo". We also know that he was highly appreciated by Roman art connoisseurs, including the Barberini family and the collector Lorenzo Onofrio Colonna (1637-1689), who owned two small works by Tibaldi painted on copper (N. Gozzano, La quadreria di Lorenzo Onofrio Colonna, in: Prestigio nobiliare e collezionismo nella Roma barocca, Rome 2004, p. 222). There is also evidence that Tibaldi worked for the art dealer Pellegrino Peri, who had his shop near the Piazza Navona (L. Lorizzo, Pellegrino Peri, Il mercato dell'arte nella Roma barocca, Roma, 2010, pp. 55-57).
The present work can be compared with other paintings by the artist with similar brushwork and the same selection of objects: For example the notes, the little dog, and the bowl filled with biscuits. Characteristic of Tibaldi's work is his tendency to gather the various objects in a very small space, creating a decorative and abundant effect.
We would like to thank Alberto Cottino for confirming the painting to be the work of Antonio Tibaldi.
