A carved wood relief of the dormition of the Virgin, probably Central Germany, circa 1500

Carved from four blocks, the reverse flattened, monochrome stain. High relief depiction showing the kneeling Virgin to the centre holding a candle in one hand. She is flanked by figures of the standing Apostles with highly individualised facial features. The accentuated figure of Saint Peter stands on the left and reads from an open prayer book.
Minor breakages, wear with minor losses. Wooden splints added to the margins of the reverse for stability. 110 x 89 x 5 cm.
