Karl Boetticher was an important early 19th century architectural theorist and author of several books on ornament and the theory of building, which he illustrated with his own lithographs. He taught at the Bauakademie in Berlin for 36 years. He also carried out numerous sketches testifying to his fascination for Gothic architecture, an enthusiasm which led to his acquaintance with Karl Friedrich Schinkel.
