Arnoldus Bloemers

Flower Still Life with a Bird's Nest

Oil on canvas (relined). 68.5 x 60 cm.
Monogrammed on the stone slab in the lower left: AB (conjoined).

Arnoldus Bloemers' vivid and forceful depictions of nature carried the Dutch tradition of still life painting into the 19th century. His works were mainly inspired by those of Jan van Huysum and Jan van Os. Bloemers tended to a large number of flowers in his own garden, so he was able to study the plants in detail first hand and had access to an endless supply of models during their blooming seasons. This is presumably what allowed him to paint his subjects in such precise detail and capture the structures, colours, and textures of the plants and bird's nest with extraordinary realism.
