August Bromeis - Wooded Landscape with Cattle by a Bridge
Wooded Landscape with Cattle by a Bridge
Oil on canvas. 120 x 170 cm.
Signed lower right: A. Bromeis.
August Bromeis studied at the Academy in Munich from 1831 to 1833 before moving to Rome, where he remained for 15 years. His oeuvre consists in equal parts of German and Italian landscapes, generally populated by rustic figures and animals. The present work is an unusually large example of a German landscape, depicting a wooden bridge over a stream and a herd of cattle. Thick deciduous woodland occupies most of the image but opens up on the left edge to reveal a view onto a village with a church spire.
