Michael Neher

Partie aus Kelheim an der Donau

Oil on panel. 39 x 32.5 cm.
Signed and dated lower right: Mich. Neher. 1844.

The back of this work bears a label inscribed with the title "Partie aus Kelheim an der Donau, gemalt von Michael Neher, München, Ruhmfordstrasse 9/3".

Although Nehler also painted portraits and genre scenes, he was primarily known for his architectural motifs. He transformed classic vedutas into atmospheric portraits of cities and their architecture, enlivened with carefully arranged staffage figures. Nehler created copious studies of medieval architecture on his trips throughout Germany, and it was with these motifs that he achieved the most artistic acclaim. He was to become the most important and successful architectural painter of his time alongside Domenico Quaglio.

This painting dated 1844 depicts part of the city wall of Kelheim. Kelheim is located in Lower Bavaria at the close of the Danube Gorge below the Michelberg, which is also the point at which the Altmühl flows into the Danube. It was already a popular travel destination for day-trippers from Munich in the 19th century.

This painting will be included in the catalogue raisonné currently being prepared by Günther Meier in Oberding.
