Andreas Schelfhout

Summer Landscape in the Meuse Valley

Oil on panel. 69 x 92.5 cm.
Signed lower right: A. Schelfhout f.

Andreas Schelfhout was born in The Hague and worked there for most of his life. He travelled to Paris in 1830, and it was only hereafter that his works began to display the extraordinary quality that gained him a reputation as one of the most important Dutch Romantic painters alongside B. C. Koekkoek. Schelfhout could depict the frozen ground, icy canals, and the joys of winter like no other. In contrast, his summer landscapes are much rarer. These too are characterised by the calm atmosphere peculiar to his depictions of landscape, and are a great tribute to his talent as a painter. This large format landscape, showing the gentle curving of the Meuse river valley in the Southern Netherlands, is an impressive example of his work. Andreas Schelfhout died in his hometown as a celebrated artist at the age of 83. He taught a great number of younger painters, including Charles Leickert and J. B. Jongkind.
