Portrait of Elisabeth Johanna Adele von Wedderkop, née Koenigs

Oil on canvas. 115 x 70 cm.
Signed and dated to the wall panelling on the lower left: MAX VOLKHART op. 174 1895.

Elisabeth was born in 1874 as the daughter of the Cologne banker Ernst Friedrich Wilhelm Koenigs (1843-1904) and his wife Johanna Bunge (1851-1934). This portrait shows Elisabeth at the age of 21, three years before her marriage to the government assessor Magnus von Wedderkop (1864-1929). After the civil wedding on 18.4.1898 in Cologne, the wedding party celebrated in Cologne's Domhotel. From then on the couple lived in Berlin. The marriage remained childless. Elisabeth's grandfather, the Cologne merchant Gustav Bunge, had Schloss Sinzig built as a summer residence for his family in 1856. As one of his only surviving heirs, Elisabeth later bequeathed the castle to the city of Sinzig. The painter Carl Christian Andreae (1823-1904), who was born in Cologne and died in Sinzig, was one of Elisabeth's uncles.
