Untitled (from the series: Métal)
1925-28

Vintage gelatin silver print. 22 x 14.3 cm. Flush-mounted to card, signed in pencil below the image on the mount. - Matted.

In 1924, Germaine Krull visited Holland for the first time, where she made extensive trips around the ports of Amsterdam and Rotterdam, fascinated by the monumental installations of cranes, freight elevators, and hoisting apparatus. In 1928, her preoccupation with the subjects of industry and machinery led to the much-noticed MÉTAL portfolio, which was enthusiastically received by Parisian avant-garde circles at that time. In this portfolio, the photographer published 64 of her photographs taken between 1922 and 1928 in the form of a loose collection of sheets using collotype printing. The here present motif was used in the portfolio (plate 38).
