After a first phase of work influenced by the Old Masters, Julius Bissier arrived at a manner of expression based on New Objectivity and influenced by Magical Realism in the 1920s. With the still lifes, landscape views and portraits created during this period, the artist achieved his first national successes. The still life presented here is of extraordinary suggestive power. Bissiers' rarely seen technique of reverse glass painting gives the cool, objective style of painting a particular brilliance and impresses with its erratic, surreal motifs.
