As Gerd Presler remarked, sketches of exotic fauna are rather rare in Kirchner's oeuvre; in this context, he referred to a sketchbook from 1926 showing depictions of elephants and suspects that the sketch at hand would most likely be considered to pertain to it (cf. Gerd Presler, Ernst Ludwig Kirchner. Die Skizzenbücher, "Ekstase des ersten Sehens", monograph and catalogue raisonné, Karlsruhe/Davos 1996, p. 324).
