A pair of Berlin KPM porcelain cups and covers with the young King and Queen

Model no. 809. With original covers and saucers. Finely painted with facing busts of King Frederick William III and Queen Louise in gilded frames. Blue sceptre mark, incised and impressed marks, one iron red 1. beneath Louise, 2. beneath Frederick William III.
Circa 1800.

Crown Prince Frederick William was born on 3rd August 1770 and married Duchess Louise of Mecklenburg Strelitz, who was six years his junior, on 24th December 1793. Just four years later, his father King Frederick William II made the decision to transfer power to his son on account of his failing health. Just a few days later, on 16th November 1797, the King passed away and the Crown Prince became King Frederick William III. These two cups can be dated to shortly after the young King's ascent to the throne.

Provenance

This work is reputed to have been a present from the young couple to the former owner, who resided in a palace near Danzig.
