A Berlin KPM porcelain tondo with a portrait of Crown Princess Elisabeth Ludovika

A relief portrait of the Crown Princess in profile facing left framed by a laurel wreath. Blue sceptre mark, impressed 16. A minor chip to the reverse. D 15.2 cm.
Circa 1830, this model attributed to Leonhard Posch.

Bavarian Princess Elisabeth Ludovika was born in 1801. She was engaged to Crown Prince Friedrich Wilhelm on 29th November 1823, at which point she moved to Prussia. Posch made several portraits of the princess. Most of his relief plaques are dated 1824/25, like this tondo, and show Ludovika as a young woman. She was known for the unusual and at that time very modern hairstyle seen in this depiction comprising of corkscrew curls at the temples and a long braid rolled up at the back of the head. She thus became a trendsetter at the court and society of Prussia.
