Gottfried Wilhelm Völcker was one of very few artists to advance from porcelain painting to the hallowed halls of the Royal Prussian Academy of Arts. His works were featured in their exhibitions in the early years of the 19th century. He specialized in flower painting, both on porcelain and on canvas, and the present work represents a characteristic testimony to his talent in this field. Far from being a traditional still life, the present work presents a detailed and naturalistic view of the flowers. In this case he has painted the stems of white lilies, a fire lily, and the flowers and foliage of a passion fruit vine against a dark background.
