A so-called "Campanino" chair

Cherrywood chair with cane upholstery. The trapezoid seat resting on two turned and two curved supports joined by stretchers, the front of which turned. The tall back slightly rounded and concave. The cane upholdstery restored. H 83.7, W 40.5, depth of seat 36 cm.
Italy or Germany, circa 1825 - 30.

This design is based on a set of 12 Italian chairs purchased either by the King of Prussia or by Schinkel whilst in Italy and used in the reception hall of Charlottenhof Palace. The Italian originals at the Prussian court were made from alder treated to resemble palisander with rush upholstery and display almost identical dimensions. There is a slight divergence in the design of the backs, which is more trapezoid and angular in the Italian chairs, jutting out over the vertical supports. Similar chairs (possibly also Italian) were also kept in the muslin cabinet of Princess Augusta in the residence of Prince Wilhelm in around 1829.

Provenance

According to tradition, the chair originates from the estate of the Landgraves of Hesse.
