A Berlin KPM porcelain tray with a view of Jasna Góra monastery

Presumably model no. 809. Oval présentoire with a finely painted view of the famous Polish monastery in Czestochowa against a hilly backdrop in a midnight blue surround. Blue sceptre mark, brown cross, impressed 23, incised II. D 29.3 cm.
Late 18th / early 19th C., possibly decorated by Gottfried Wilhelm Völcker.

This view of the most famous monastery and pilgrimage site in Poland is probably based on an engraving, as it is assumed that the artist did not have first-hand knowledge of the area. After the Bar Confederation (Polish Konfederacja barska), the abbey fell into Russian hands and was partially destroyed. Count Alois Friedrich von Brühl (1739 - 1793) began making efforts for its restoration in 1783. This plate may have been a Polish commission intended to commemorate or celebrate this occasion, and shows the condition of the monastery in around 1790/1800.

Literature

This painter's mark has been tentatively attributed to the young Gottfried Wilhelm Völcker, cf. Wittwer (ed.), Raffinesse & Eleganz, Munich 2007, no. 87.
