A rare Berlin KPM porcelain vase with moulded flowers

Unidentified baluster form model with cylindrical neck. Decorated throughout with floral appliques above a basket and pâte-sur-pâte ornament. Blue sceptre mark with Sgr.P., impressed 18 and 1 S. Minor chips to the flower appliques. With ormolu mountings in the Rococo taste. H 24.5 cm.
Circa 1880 - 90.

The creation of a new porcelain mass known as Seger porcelain was a groundbreaking innovation at KPM. Synthesised in 1880 by Dr. Hermann Seger, the new mass was a revolutionary step for porcelain making in Berlin. A soft paste porcelain with a significantly lower firing point, Seger porcelain allowed for entirely new means of décor, including coloured underglaze pigments which had presented technical problems for arcanists since the dawn of porcelain making.
